The History of the Rives Mansion

Uncover evolution of this iconic building.

Judge James Christopher Rives (1864-1923) was born in Atlanta during the Civil War but spent nearly his entire life in Downey, California. At the age of 14, he dropped out of school to support his family following the death of his father, a pioneering doctor in Los Angeles. Rives never attended college; instead, he started a printing business at 16 and worked as a printer for the Los Angeles Times. By the age of 21, he owned and published the Downey Weekly Review while also studying law. He notably printed his newspaper out of a barn located behind his mansion.

Rives married Mary Lee Crowell (1862-1945), and together they had four children. He joined the bar at 23 and became a successful lawyer, serving two terms as the District Attorney of Los Angeles County, first being elected in 1898 and holding the position for four years. In 1906, he was elected to the L.A. County Superior Court, where he gained respect as a probate court judge, with some even suggesting he run for governor.

Rives's estate features three floors and a basement. The first floor includes the kitchen, living room, dining room, family room, and several additional spaces. The second floor contains a series of bedrooms, some with balconies offering views over various areas of the city. The third floor, once a ballroom, has a large window facing Paramount Boulevard. All bathrooms and restrooms have been authentically restored to their original state. As a well-known pioneer in Downey, Rives’s home has been designated a landmark.

Rives Avenue is named in his honor, and his mansion still stands today, recognized as a historical site.
